about larry youngson

Larry Youngson photoMy name is Larry Youngson, and I am currently based in Esperance Western Australia. I was born in 1952, in Perth, and In my early years, I travelled extensively around Australia and eventually came to settle in Byron Bay, NSW, where I enjoyed the country surf life style for which Byron Bay is so well known.

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a paint brush of some description, in my hand. Between 1975 and 1995, I owned and operated Sunrise Signworks, a small Graphic Design & Signwriting Business, and was responsible for the graphic artwork, signwriting and signage of San Juan Surfboards and Warren Cornish, the first surf shop in Byron Bay, NSW.

I also lectured on art, design and calligraphy at various adult educational centres. I had the privilege of starting and managing the Bangalow Old Theatre Art Gallery, and working on community arts projects with the Byron Shire Council, where I collaborated with architects and interior designers on both private and commercial projects.

my abstract art work

Abstract art work is a passion that allows me to paint compositions based on abstractions inspired by the natural landscape and unspoilt beaches around Esperance Western Australia. Over the years I have worked with a variety of very talented artists and this process work has helped me to find and develop my own identifiable style and approach to my abstract art work. After years of experimenting, I found myself drawn to abstract impressionism as the most creative way for me personally to express my individuality. I've written an article called "Art...the process of communicating' which explains more about the methods I use in my abstract art work.

inspirations for abstract art work

My abstract art work has been greatly inspired by my travels overseas to magical places like Bali, Italy, Greek Islands and Japan, as well as, from my own interests in the arts and architecture. Creative influences from ancient cities to modern environmentally friendly designs have affected my lifestyle have also inspired my abstract art work. For example, during a visit to the Greek Islands my family and I we were totally inspired by a place called Santorini. So much so that when my family decided to moved to the isolated coastal town of Esperance in Western Australia, we built our own Mediterranean Style Villa, overlooking the Recherche Archipelago and named it Santorini Beach House & Studio.

My Santorini Beach Art Studio location is in a haven that continually fills me with inspiration that not only fuels my passion for abstract art work but also helps to maintain and grow my strong affinity with the Australian landscape. My love of the ocean and 'beach culture' is also a great inspiration and I advise anyone that loves pristine beaches to visit Esperance. Another source of inspiration from the natural worlds are the wonderful abstract fiery colours found in the Australian Opal, which I try to incorporate into my colorful abstract art work whenever I can.
