art ... the process of communication

abstract paintingI like the idea of painting as a kind of mysterious journey, with its own, unpredictable sense of movement and change. By observation and reflection, you make discoveries that are locked away in your sub-concious, ready to to explode onto canvass at some unknown time in the future.

A work of art that grows intuitively, can be both exciting and rewarding, not only for the artist but those who are stimulated and moved to be a custodian of the paintings. To create something worth while and reach artistic maturity takes time, as history has shown. At this stage of my career, I am painting in a manner that is much more free, forceful and confident than previously, which I think signals a breakthrough in a move toward a responsive style of working.

The words of the grandfather of Impressionism, Claude Monet, come to mind;

The Creative Process

To give you some insight on how I achieve the vibrance and texture in my artwork, I will help you through the journey of this artist's creative process. Generally, I spend quite some time meditating on a particular concept and then draw some rough sketches. As I make up my own timber frames for the canvass, this helps consolidate the imagery into its right dimensions. Once the canvass is stretched and primed, coloured chalk and soft pencils are used for a rough outline, which again helps me to become familiar with the surface.

Now are you ready for the secret ingredient.........its music ! It can be anything, from the sound of U2 to Pavarotti. Music can stimulate the senses and take you to that level of creativity. I can feel myself getting excited about squeezing my first tube of colour onto the bare canvass. While I'm squeezing my chosen colours, I am thinking what shades of colour I can achieve and what special effects with my special knife will make the painting extra ordinary and visually stimulating.

Colour is My Thing !

My colour combinations, whether it be impressionistic or abstract painting, seems to attract a positive note or response from clients serious about collecting artwork they can enjoy, which I feel is most important. Although some of my paintings have been sold through galleries for double the price in the secondary market, most of my collectors have a love affair with the artwork staying firmly on the wall.

With paintings, starting as low as $500 for an original acrylic on canvass, you can understand that my life is full and satisfying, trying to keep up with the demand....I think its time to put some music!
